Three Tips for Healthy Estrogen Metabolism

Not All Estrogens Are Equal

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I’m focusing on female hormonal health.

You may have heard that estrogen fuels breast cancer risk…

…but it’s more complicated than that.

Estrogen - whether made in the body or taken in externally from hormone therapy - is metabolized through pathways in the liver, forming estrogen metabolites. Estrogen metabolites interact with genetics, liver enzymes, antioxidants, and other biochemical pathways to ultimately influence breast cancer risk.

There are many different estrogen metabolites - and some metabolites present a greater risk than others.

Three Ways to Support Healthy Estrogen Metabolism

1️⃣ Support Estrogen Elimination Through the Gut

A healthy gut is essential for removing excess estrogen from your body. Make sure to include fiber-rich foods like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains in your diet. Probiotics can also help maintain a balanced gut microbiome. For additional support, consider supplements like calcium-D-glucarate, which aids in the detoxification of estrogen.

2️⃣ Promote Liver Detoxification with Nutrient-Dense Foods

The liver plays a critical role in breaking down estrogen. Sulfur-rich foods like onions, garlic, broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts support this natural detox process. Antioxidant-rich supplements, such as resveratrol, can further boost liver function and enhance estrogen metabolism.

3️⃣ Encourage Favorable Estrogen Metabolites

Certain estrogen metabolites are more beneficial for your health than others. Supplements like DIM (diindolylmethane), derived from cruciferous vegetables, can help your body produce more favorable estrogen metabolites, supporting overall hormone balance.

Remember, the most effective approach to hormone health is one that’s personalized to you. By working with a healthcare provider, you can create a plan that supports your unique hormonal needs.
