Nutrient Spotlight: Glutathione
Today I’m focusing on an antioxidant that I routinely measure in and discuss with my patients - Glutathione.
WHAT IS GLUTATHIONE AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Glutathione is one of the most important molecules you need to stay healthy and prevent disease.
Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant in every cell of your body. It is often called the “master” antioxidant due to it’s important role in a number of processes, including:
➡️ Neutralizing free radicals
➡️ Recycling other antioxidants—like vitamins C, E, and CoQ10
➡️ Supporting liver detox pathways (glutathione is the most critical and integral part of your detoxification system)
➡️ Support for immune cell function
➡️ Support for muscle development and repair
Basically, without glutathione, our cells would be overtaken by free radicals and oxidative stress with unimaginable consequences.
WHO NEEDS GLUTATHIONE?
Simple answer - everyone!
While our cells make glutathione every day, there are many factors that can contribute to a higher need for this incredible antioxidant:
😕 Weight gain
🍩 Poor eating habits
🍷 Alcohol consumption
👵 Aging
😣 Stress
🧬 Genetic Factors
HOW TO BOOST GLUTATHIONE
There are a number of ways you can boost this critical nutrient.
Consume sulfur-rich foods - like garlic, onions and the cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, etc.).
Boost glutathione though exercise - aim for 30 minutes daily of sweaty, aerobic exercise and 2-3 strength-training sessions per week.
Add whey protein to your smoothie - source wisely by choosing a hormone-free, antibiotic-free product from a reputable source.
Use nutritional supplements to boost glutathione - including N-acetylcysteine (NAC), Alpha-lipoic Acid, Milk Thistle (Silymarin), Selenium and the B-vitamins - Folate, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12.
You can also supplement glutathione directly—as long as it is a high quality and absorbable form. I use a liposomal form and I generally reserve this for more ill or compromised patients.
Are you curious about which nutritional supplements are right for you?
